TAMIL CINEMA 2001 - STATISTICS

Trends

The year had a few hits and a lot of misses. Contrary to last year, the movies with the big heros were hits. This excludes Kamal's ALAVANDHAN (Please note that Prashanth is not considered amongst the big ones). Vijayakanth, Vijay and Ajeeth gave 3 hits each. However in 2000, they gave one flop each (SIMMASANAM, KANNUKKUL NILAVU and UNNAI KODU ENNAI THARUVEN). In 2000, it appeared that the star craze was fading away but 2001 proves it wrong.

The no of tamil movies which was decreasing in the last few years, has increased in 2001 !!

Not worth mentioning - but this is the 6th year in a row that he figures in this list

Vivek has performed comedy roles in 21 Films and Vadivelu in 19 films. Goundamani and Senthil have acted in 4 films each. This would clearly show the increasing demand and changing trend.

Year 2001 was also another Graphic Godesses Year, where Ramanarayanan again directed the most number of films (3). Director, Sunder C also directed 3 films.

Sex Bomb(?!), Mumtaj continued her dancing dominance with 6 films. Producers have decided not to release any film without Mumtaj's dance. However, towards the end of 2001, Mumtaj has decided to accept films only if she has a few scenes to exhibit her acing talents (he heee).

Tit Bits

There was a rumour that Sakshi used her look alike sister to act for her whenever she had given call sheets for more than two films on the same day.

Mansoor Ali Khan acted as villain outside the silver screen. He was charged with rape and was sentenced for 7 years.

Kamal's wife, Sarika fell from her terrace and was badly hurt. Fortunately she recovered soon.

People stopped going for night shows. Thanx to SUN TV's tele-serial, CHITTI. The serial had everyone glued to the TV sets between 9:30pm to 10:00pm for almost one whole year.

Leading Actress, Devayani eloped and got married to director, Rajakumaran. Other actresses, like Meera, Alphonsa and Visithra got married in a similar way.

Another marriage which shocked everyone was the marriage of Sarath Kumar and Radhika.

Director, Balachander claimed to have directed his 100th film, PARTHALEY PARAVASAM. This was not true since he had included his television serials as well as movies like THAMARAI NENJAM for which he had just scripted the dialogues. However, PARTHALEY PARAVASAM bombed at the box office.

Ramarajan and his wife Nalini got themselves legally separated.

Sivaji Ganesan's death shocked millions of tamil across the world.

Jaiganesh (Actor), K V Mahadevan (Music Director), Thirupathiswamy (Director) and Manivasagam (Director) are others who would be missed by tamil cinema.

Inorder to prevent television's dominance, the tamil cinema associations banned interviews to televisions. Action was taken against those film stars who had acted against the ban.
