Why this rating is different: The rating is not based on collection or popularity alone. As someone who watches a lot of movies (well almost all), these are my own judgemental rating. My apologies if these ratings have disappointed you (ofcourse we can debate - gokul@cooljilax.com).

Veyil

: Pasupathi, Bharat & Bhavana

Music: G V Prakash Kumar

Director: Vasanthabalan

A bold attempt. The story of a loser! Director Shankar needs to be appreciated for producing such a wonderful movie. Great acting by all (esp. Pasupathi) and a flawless script has ensured that the film tops my list. The Sun as a backdrop is another novel idea. Winner-loser combo to tackle boredom deserves a mention. Good music. Commercially good too. Released in December.

Vetayadu Vilayadu

: Kamal, Jyothika & Komalini

Music : Harris Jeyaraj

Director : Goutham Menon

Biggest grosser of 2006. Fast paced narrative, stylish editing, superb photography, amazing music score and Kamal's performance ensured repeat audience to this thriller. Goutham Menon's hat-trick in tamil. Rated second because of resemblance to Kaakha Kaakha, the love episodes that derail the tempo, thin story line (Goa song) and too much english (!). I loved this film. 100 Days.

Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi

: Vadivelu & Vadivelu

Music: Sabesh Murali

Director: Chimbudevan

Innovative! A period film mixed with satire and humour. Again credit to Director Shankar for his trust in the new director and to cast Vadivelu as a hero in twin role. The film laughed its way through the box-office. If only the director had avoided certain serious moments, the film would have created history. Everyone is waiting for a sequel. 100 Days.

Pattiyal

: Aarya & Bharat

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Director: Vishnuvardhan

There were too many gangster movies this year but this one stood out. A sleek film. Director Vishnuvardhan proved that his capability after last year's hit, Arindhum Ariyamalum. Yuvan's music rocked. The no compromise climax was well received by the audience. 100 days.

E

: Jeeva & Nayanthara

Music: Srikanth Deva

Director: S P Jhananathan

Fresh. Jhananathan made the award winning "Eyarkai" a few years ago and this year he delivered another winner. The concept of biological warfare and related international network was novel. A practical hero, mild comedy and excellent screenplay aided the films moderate success and won critical acclaim.

Varalaru

: Ajith & Asin

Music: A R Rehman

Director: K S Ravikumar

Finally, Ajith gets a hit after many years (his previous hit was "Villain"). This time too, it was K S Ravikumar who helped him. Nearly 2 years in making and when the film hit the screen not many were confident about it. The director proved that he is a screenplay master. Ajith in 3 roles, carried the film through some fine acting. A big hit and running towards 100 days.

Thirutupayaley

: Jeevan, Sonia Agarwal & Malavika

Music: Bharadwaj

Director: Susi Ganesan

From the director of "5 Star" came the surprise hit of the year. A racy film with several twists. Jeevan played with ease, the role of a hero with negative shades. The theme was bold and climax was different. The film made a lot of money. 100 days.

Thiruvilayadal Aarambam

: Dhanush, Prakashraj & Shreya

Music: D Imman

Director: Bhoopathy Pandiyan

A 100% entertainer. Dhanush tasted his much wanted hit. A simple comedy with cool acting by Dhanush. The scenes between Prakashraj & Dhanush had audience clapping non-stop. Big hit in all centres. Running towards 100 days.

Dishyum

: Jeeva & Sandhya

Music: Vijay Antony

Director: Sasi

Director Sasi takes his sweet time to make movies. Despite two hits (Sollamaley & Roja Kootam), he has taken so much time for his third film. Good storyline, a neat screenplay, great music, comedy and fine performances ensured that the film was liked by all segments. 100 days.

Chitiram Pesuthadi

: Naren & Bhavana

Music: C Suresh Babu

Director: Myskin

This film was removed from all theatres in its second week. Producer 'Oscar' Ravichandran took over the movie and redistributed it with some fine marketing. The song "Vala Meenu" was the biggest hit song of the year and it ensured that the film became a huge hit. Even without that song, this film would have still figured in my top 10. A 100 day film.
